Tara Relief Sculptures for The Maitreya Project

REFUGEE

Dedicated to Tara

Tara is called both "Mother of all the Buddhas" and "Liberator". She is one of the most beloved of Buddhist deities and is the female aspect of Avelokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

I was given the name Gyalten Drolma by Venerable Choden Rinpoche at Land of Medicine Buddha. As I understand, Gyalten means Victory Banner and Drolma is another name for Tara. Lossely translated this name means "the victory of Buddha's teachings through the bodhisattva Tara."

Tara's mantra is OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA

om tare tutare ture soha

who was she

nothing was exactly as she thought

all was changing

day by day

inch by inch

give her a pinch

was anything real

how does that feel

 om tare tutare ture soha

when Buddha spoke

fire and smoke

through it shone the sun

that was fun

prism light

laser beam

into each and every heart

he taught her to be smart

om tare tutare ture soha

it made her choke

each heart was broke

down fell a tear

he made it clear

why she was here

karma

illusion

cause and effect

we seem to get what we expect

om tare tutare ture soha

yet the question remained

who was she

flying

here and there

she'd come to help and care

a smile could change a person's day

could save them in a pinch

it was a cinch

om tare tutare ture soha

bringing peace

joy

delight

she had come to be

rejoice

a refugee

nowhere to go

nothing to do

all her dreams were coming true

heard her say

there's only this day

anyway

hello it’s me

a singing dancing refugee

om tare tutare ture soha

 into bodhichitta

I hope to some day meet ya

half way round the moon

in some happy space

we’ll all share a tune

into forever all afternoon

how wondrous to simply say

I choose to play

and find

ways of being kind

sweet you see

because she’s me

om tare tutare ture soha
