(These are sequential stories written in memory of DJ, our our parakeet. DJ represents my inner child and his loss became an opportunity to heal a part of myself which became lost and wounded during my childhood.) I once had a very special turquoise and white parakeet. He was special in every way. I named him “DJ” since he so loved listening to any kind of music. He was an excellent speaker and had a cheerful, talkative personality.
One of our favorite things to do together was to go for short drives in my car. He would hop right up onto my right shoulder, or up onto the top of the head rest, to see the sights as we drove along the highway. Once in awhile he’d sit on my chest, crouched down over my heart, to snuggle.
But the radio simply HAD to be on, and he loved it cranked up loud. Then he would start to sing me love songs. We would both be singing at the same time, at the top of our voices. I enjoyed adlibbing as we sang, changing the words in each song, so I could sing his name or add in “I love you, DJ”. This was our very favorite thing to do.
When DJ left the body, I made a sacred garden in his memory. In his garden, I placed a small Medicine Buddha statue. Then each night we lit a tiny candle in front of the Buddha in his garden.
From the get-go, I was extrememely surprised to find that DJ was in constant communication with me. It was as if he were on my shoulder, speaking right into my ear, non-stop. He told me so many things, I cannot even remember them all. It was too fast and furious to write it all down. He made commentaries on EVERYTHING. This was especially true for the first couple of weeks.
Some things DJ told me stood out as ‘spectacular’ or ‘unusual’, ‘insightful’, as well as downright ‘mind-blowing’.
As a way of honoring my precious DJ and preserving his teachings, I have decided to write what I call THE DJ CHRONICLES..... the delightful teachings of my sweet, loveable, pet parakeet.
