DHARMA DOG

9.14.04

He was special in every way.

Kind, enthusiastic,

and unable to hold a grudge over anything:

our pet dog.

He had begun guarding me

each time I did my morning meditation practice

outdoors on our patio.

Gathering up my notebook,

prayers and steaming coffee cup,

he would bolt over to the back door,

tail wagging, eager to join me.

Once outside,

he would quickly walk to his special guarding spot.

There he would rest contentedly

while I did my practice.

Once the practice finished,

I would gather up my things

and bring them back into the house.

Our dog would join me,

tail again wagging.

Then I did my prostrations,

3 quick bows,

in front of our family Buddha statue.

Today was a special day for me,

for as I did my 3 quick prostrations,

I realized that our dog was joining in with me!

As my head touched the ground,

he stretched, with his rear in the air, and then laid down.

I bowed again.

He stretched, with his rear in the air, and then laid down.

And then as I did my third bow,

he did his third bow,

stretched, with his rear in the air, and then laid down.

I was pretty amazed by this, to say the least.

So just to test it,

I did one more bow.

Sure enough,

he stretched, with his rear in the air, and then laid down.

How Beautiful.

We have a Dharma Dog.
