BE A LIGHT UNTO YOURSELF

(One obstacle I encountered, and overcame, on my spiritual path)

Sequel to the story, SITTING BULL, SITTING DUCK

2/27/04

After doing an Internet search on Sitting Bull, I decided to dance to SACRED SPIRIT, an Native American CD. As I reflected on his biography, I danced. As I danced, I looked at myself in the full length mirror and felt love for myself and him.

Immediately I started crying. So it went, for an hour or so....dancing, reflecting, crying.

I noticed at some point that I was integrating qualities of Sitting Bull into myself. ...disowned parts of myself.....things I really didn’t wish to ‘own.'

Some of these were seeing the massacre of a race of people....all the dead bodies......hating war, yet wishing to survive and wanting to assist others to survive, feeling trapped and innocently unable to understand, feeling indignant,

feeling overwhelmed by odds Too Big to overcome....

other qualities were owning my Stubbornness, my Power, my Leadership qualities.....

and lastly, the ‘corker,' was feeling betrayed by my own people.

This ‘betrayal by my own people’ has been an upsetting theme for me in this life, leading me more and more into seclusion.

Finally, as I danced, I "got it."

All I had to do, to see this rightly, was to Turn the Corners of my Mouth UP, instead of Down.

Yes....I could smile, as I danced, as well as cry.

This was when I realized that having been ‘betrayed by my own people’ was actually The Lesson....the Gift.

I have heard that some of Buddha’s last words on Earth were, “Be a light unto yourself."

What better way to learn this most Difficult, yet Transformative lesson, than to ‘be betrayed by one’s own people’?

When there’s no one, nothing, left on the outside to lean on, then one is Forced to learn to stand on one’s own....

to ‘be a light unto oneself.'
